The Irony

by Asabi Rawlins 04.02.2010
I know when people argue about this they quote the Bible (and religion). But our Bible also teaches us to love our neighbor as we love ourselves, it cautions that we should not judge and states that God made EVERYONE in his image and likeliness.

Gays..lesbians... trans-genders... transsexuals. I don't know whether they are wrong or right and it is not my place to judge them. Ridicule them or look to them as a source of perversion or entertainment. They are human, thus I respect them. I know not what they go through, their struggle is foreign to me. Maybe they are born that way ..maybe it is a hormonal imbalance: there a lot of maybes but it's not my place to choose which maybe I prefer. The fact is they are people, most likely they are faced with many challenges as they try to come to terms with being who they are and if I taunt them, degrade them, make them feel inadequate ..I simply exacerbate the issue.

Furthermore, we never argue about why some people are born red heads while others are born blondes, we never argue about why some people are tall and others are short. So WHY, WHY do we persistently debate LGBTs when millions of people are dying of hunger? Millions face religious persecution, millions suffer worldwide and by discriminating against LGBTs we neglect bigger issues and let millions of others suffer more.

I see new great comments girls:-) Of course agreed to everything. It happens to me, that some co-believers consider me not being a proper Christian; because the guy who cuts my hair is gay and because I think Moslims are great people too and I don't look at them as a reason for all the bad in this world. How sad is that? Using the religion in the wrong way and therefore causing it a bad reputation.

well at least some people understand where I'm coming from....I've been blasted by some bible carrying hypocrites for my views....BUT I am a Christian too I love God just as well but I don't support discrimination on any level.. I am not gay but I can only imagine what it's like to have who you are questioned on a daily basis, also to have to hide yourself away from the world and people who claim to attack you because they "love you"...IT'S JUST HORRID p.s...I still don't know if people's personal choices are right or wrong but the point I am trying to make is that IT IS NONE OF MY BUSINESS TO DEFINE/OBJECTIFY/RIDICULE ANYONE...it's the individual's life and the individual's choice..all i can do as a human being is RESPECT that person as long as his choices/actions don't cause harm to others or the environment !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh, and with the Bible discussion... very true, it shouldn't be used as an argument against these people. Which one is better: to be a gay who is a very good person, who respects others, who helps others, who loves, or to be a heterosexual who doesn't give a dime on anything but his/herself, who cheats, who pays no respect whatsoever to those around him/her ?

I completely agree with you, this is a great article that you've written. It is the right way to look at things. We shouldn't be judging each other in matter like these that you've mentioned, it is not our right, nor our authority. People ought to start looking more at the person, rather than at the "cover"(race, look, sexual orientation etc.), like they usually do. They may be amazed by how interesting, smart and great-quality some people could be, regardless of their so-presumed defects. After all, you're not talking to one's sexual orientation, you're not going to the movies with one's skin colour, you don't hang out with one's social status... it is the PERSON with his/her unique personality that you're actually interested in (or should be interested in).

Hey Erdal, you can't call religion a dream, it is much more complex than that. Of course it does not say anything specific about LGBT rights, but it says something about love and respect, it is called "a book of books" for some reason. But I hate as much as you and Asabi the fact that some use it as an argument for disrespect towards gays etc... Cheers!

Is there anything about LGBT Rights? There is a lot of thing that you can learn from novels and they will be more realistic than other novels. The world teaches us everything; pain, tears, anger, discrimination,.....so we cannot live in our dreams, they won't teach us anything...

I agree with the fact that we don't need anything to show respect for humanity (good point!) but on the other side I would say that the Bible teaches us a lot.

erdal, valid point indeed.. I was simply stating that the 'argument' most people put up is the one with respect to religion. But you are right erdal

God, bible or whatever you want, teaches us nothing. We dont need anything to show respect for humanity...
